DIY Wonder Class: How to Make a Balloon Garland?

While there are indeed many celebrations, it can be rather hard to celebrate especially with MCO and lockdowns placed on various areas. Nevertheless, those lockdowns shouldn’t stop one from still celebrating wherever they are. How should one celebrate then? With balloons of course!
This tutorial will show you two different ways to create a pretty balloon garland. One using the balloon chain tape and one without the chain tape.

Create Balloon Garlands in Two Ways

Do you want a decoration that will last a long time? Balloon garlands will certainly last a long time and won’t require you to put it up on the day of the event as you can prep it a day before. Another thing about these balloon garlands is that they are in a way a balloon arch or balloon half-arch. It’s fun to work with as you play around with the shapes of the balloon garland. You don’t need to stress yourself with preparing the balloon garland. Just be sure to have plenty of balloons and some time to make this!

A) Create a balloon garland with the balloon chain tape

This balloon garland is relatively easy to make but would require a lot of time as you’ll be inflating balloons and tying them one by one.

Items you will need:

  1. Balloon chain tape – This plastic balloon chain tape is easy to use and measures at about 5m long. Certainly long enough for your balloon garland.
  2. Electric pump – You can use a normal hand pump, but if you want to finish faster and with lesser work, an electric pump is what we would recommend.
  3. 12″ Latex Balloons – The color selection and amount of these 12 inch latex balloons is completely up to you. But it’s good to have at least 50-ish balloons just in case any pops and also depending on the length of your balloon garland.
  4. 5″ Latex Balloons – This also depends on how many 5 inch latex balloons you’d like to use. Having at least 50-ish balloons is also a good amount. Better to have too many rather than too little.
  5. Balloon dot tape – The balloon dot tape is perfect for adding on balloons that will fill in the gaps of your balloon garland.

Steps:

  1. Firstly, inflate all the balloons using the electric pump and tie them up separately. Be sure you have enough space to store them for the time being.
  2. Next, take your balloon chain tape and start to insert the end of one balloon at a time through the holes provided. You can leave a short gap if you want or put them through each hole.
  3. Fill up the holes. You can work out a pattern if you’d like but you don’t need to stress on this part. Always place the bigger balloons in first.
  4. If you’re satisfied with the length, you can cut the plastic balloon chain tape and then start to hang up the garland by using hooks or nails on the wall. Be careful not to pop your balloons as you place them up though!
  5. You can also tie a nylon string/fishing line through the balloon chain tape and hang it up that way if you’d prefer.
  6. Set up the garland to however you like. This is when you can use the balloon dot tape to stick on additional balloons that will fill in the gaps of your garland.
  7. Take a good look at your balloon garland, it’s backdrop and see if you like how it looks!

B) Create a balloon garland without a balloon chain tape

Items you will need:

  1. Electric pump – You can use a normal hand pump, but if you want to finish faster and with lesser work, an electric pump is what we would recommend.
  2. 12″ Latex Balloons – The color selection and amount of these 12 inch latex balloons is completely up to you. But it’s good to have at least 50-ish balloons just in case any pops and also depending on the length of your balloon garland.
  3. 5″ Latex Balloons – This also depends on how many 5 inch latex balloons you’d like to use. Having at least 50-ish balloons is also a good amount. Better to have too many rather than too little.
  4. Balloon dot tape – The balloon dot tape is perfect for adding on balloons that will fill in the gaps of your balloon garland.
  5. Nylon fishing line/string – Nylon fishing lines or strings are great to use when you want to tie up balloons. And you don’t need to worry about it being visible nor worry about it popping your balloons.

Steps:

  1. Firstly, inflate the balloons with the electric pump. Instead of tying the balloons separately, you can tie two or more balloons together at a time. You will then have several clusters of balloons to set aside.
  2. In your clusters, create big clusters and small clusters. It will be easier to group up your balloon garland later.
  3. Once all your clusters are set, take a nylon fishing line and start by tying it around your clusters. Ensure the smallest cluster is at the bottom then proceed to add on more and more clusters.
  4. After you’re done tying up the balloons, you can fill in the gaps with additional balloons using the balloon dot tape. You will only need to stick it on.
  5. Using the nylon string, you can then hang up your garland easily to any available hooks or nails. Be careful again as you do this to ensure you don’t pop the balloons.
  6. Take a good look at your garland and fix accordingly. Other than that, it’s all done!

A typical balloon garland will use about 100-120 balloons, so again, be sure to have plenty of balloons available and ready. Remember, the more, the merrier! Have fun creating your own balloon garland for your special event!☺️
